BT Young Scientist 2008  14:52 Saturday, 19/1/2008
In recent years the name of Synge Street CBS has been associated with the wonderful exhibition. We have had a tremendous run of success in recent years. There are very few schools that can boast the roll of honour that we can. On two occasions in recent year students from this school have been deemed to be the BT Young Scientist of the Year. One of these, Abdulsalem Ababaker, went on to become European Young Scientist of the year in September 2007. All of the projects have been in the Mathematical and Chemical Section and all of the recent prize winners have been mentored by the legendary Jim Cooke.

This year, in order to give others a chance, we took some time out. That was until Olawale Hassan persisted in his attempt to become the first prize winner in the Social and Behavioural Category. While one group had managed to get to the finals of this section, in the Senior Group in 2007, no-one had managed to get on the podium! Last years project, led by Stephan Donegan, ably assisted by Mark Birney and Shane Watson, received high praise from the judges. Lessons were learned by all, especially by Wale (as he is known in 'Synger'!), and he was very keen to be a part of the history of this wonderful long-running exhibition.

He worked right through the Summer and into the new school year. His project, on the topic of AIDS awareness among young people in the Dublin 8 area, was accepted for the final stages of the competition in November and he continued through the Christmas Holidays with his research.

We are delighted that he received his just reward. On the night of Friday, January 11th,2008, he became the first student from Synge Street CBS to win a prize in the Social and Behavioural Category. He took third place, a tremendous achievement and recognition of the time and energy he put into the project. We are very proud of this achievement and wish him well in his career in the years ahead.

His mentor, Michael Minnock, Principal of the school, could not be more proud of this success. In his view it shows what hard work and commitment to the task in hand can achieve. Well done Wale!
